Dream teams to the fore as HR salutes its own

Leading human resources managers for overseas companies in China have won awards for team spirit and business acumen in financial and other sectors.

The ninth annual China Staff HR Awards recognized the role that HR professionalism plays in organized performance, and promote this mindset for all future HR practices.

Teams from healthcare companies Baxter and AstraZeneca were among the winners at the awards held at Shanghai's Grand Hyatt on Thursday. To receive one of the 10 awards on offer, entrants needed to demonstrate their ability to develop and execute human resources strategies and to show that there were tangible benefits for their organizations as a result.

"To be a good HR director, the main thing you need is to have a really strong team." said Elaine Lin, Baxter Healthcare China's HR Director and winner of the China Team International's HR Director of the Year Award.

Teawwork was an area pinpointed by judges.

David Kelly, CCH China country manager, said: "It's the impact that HR can have on the business turnover and retention of staff. The key now is how well the HR manager can integrate into the team and be able to demonstrate and impact on the business."

CCH China is responsible for designing and developing professional bilingual publications about China to provide reliable and updated HR information for investors, corporations and advisors.

"For me the biggest business challenge has always been HR - hiring professional staff in China at the speed I want to hire, train and keep them," said Kelly. "These things are more important even than sales effectiveness or the production side of the business.

"China wants to compete on a world stage, but needs to be able to first compete locally with the international companies here."

The awards that have been held in China for the past four years only include international companies or local divisions of those companies.

Kelly said there are plans to hold awards for local companies.

"HR in Shanghai and indeed China is improving rapidly. There are more local companies who have good HR practices so CCH wants to encourage them to influence other companies in China."
