Civil servant jobs attractive

Tens of thousands of Shanghai residents have signed up to sit the exam to become a civil servant working for a central government agency, pushing the number of applicants to a new high only half way into its online registration, the Youth Daily reported today.

Since the application process kicked off on October 23, the Shanghai Entry-exit Inspection and Quarantine Agency has collected more than 5,000 resumes, more than any other unit, for its 200 positions.

The local branch of China's Insurance Regulatory Commission is among the most popular with applicants, with 1,114 vying for only five vacancies, the report said.

Nationwide, the competition for central government civil servant jobs is even keener, as more than 2,400 applicants were attracted to a job with the Ministry of Agriculture, the report said.

"Many vacancies require at least two years of working experience, so I really consider myself lucky to have passed the preliminary review," a senior student speaking on condition of anonymity is quoted as saying.

Civil servant jobs in China are attractive due to their stability, good pension plan and handsome salary.

The examination to recruit civil servants for the central government is usually held in December while that for Shanghai civil servants begins in January. The online registration will end on November 2 this year.
